Innova presenting a paper on Comelicopedia at the Workshop on «Semantics in Governance and Policy Modelling» in conjunction with Extended Semantic Web Conference (ESWC), May 29th-June 2nd, Heraklion, Greece

The 8th Extended Semantic Web Conference (ESWC 2011) in Heraklion presented the latest results in research, technologies and applications in its field and was composed of a number of thematic workshops.

Alessio Gugliotta, Senior ICT expert from Innova, presented a paper, written in collaboration with Franco Alberti and Igor Jogan from the Italian Veneto Region, at the workshop on «Semantics in Governance and Policy Modelling». The paper entitled “Comelicopedia: a Collaborative, Semantically-enriched Knowledge Base for the Sustainable Development in Mountain Areas” reports on the expected achievements and the preliminary results of an ongoing work in developing a semantic wiki, supporting decision makers to effectively identify relevant knowledge about sustainable development in mountain areas.

The underlying idea is to experiment a new, pragmatic approach in SD planning that could complement some of the existing and dominating tools that have been vigorously criticized by the community of both scholars and practitioners. The work represents a real-world example of adopting semantic and Web 2.0 technologies in complex domains, such as governance and policy making.

The workshop targeted novel approaches, methods, practices and tools for turning the public information overload into an opportunity for Governance and Policy Modeling with the help of semantics, open data and Public Sector Information reuse, linked data and visual analytics. Specific importance is to be placed in multidisciplinary approaches, combining theoretical policy making methodologies, advanced ICT and Government 2.0 collaboration practices.

The Extended Semantic Web Conference successfully brought together top notch researchers and practitioners dealing with different aspects of semantic technologies where research on semantic technologies were able to benefit from ideas and cross-fertilization with many other areas, including Artificial Intelligence, Natural Language Processing, Database and Information Systems, Information Retrieval, Multimedia, Distributed Systems, Social Networks, Web Engineering, and Web Science.
