Workshop on Services for Innovating firms, 28-29 April 2011, Marseille (France)

The workshop on Services for Innovating Firms: Role of Technoparks and Incubators take took place on April 28-29, 2011 in Marseille as a joint initiative from the Center for Mediterranean Integration, the European Investment Bank and  the World Bank Institute (WBI). It was addressed to policy makers, technopark and incubator managers, key business persons, as well as members from academia, from Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Syria, and Tunisia.

Aleardo FURLANI, CEO of INNOVA, chaired the working session on financing services focusing on:

  • How public venture capital (VC) programs can compensate for the lack of early stage investment capital
  • How local VC funds and business angel networks are linked with technoparks and science parks
  • To what extent public guarantee schemes that facilitate the access to the banking sector can meet entrepreneurship needs
  • How Private equity fund raising (IPO) in regions where this market is particularly narrow can operate
  • The program on Financing Innovation Projects is motivated by the need to increase the deal flows of “bankable” innovation projects within the Mediterranean area and in so doing, enhance innovation policies and develop the capacity of innovation agencies in Mediterranean countries. There is a need to incubate these types of projects through appropriate means, as well as assist their initiators from a managerial, technical, commercial and financial viewpoint.

    The workshop is part of a series of initiatives within the wider program on Financing Innovation Projects for 2009/2011, led by the EIB with the World Bank’s cooperation. It is designed to:

    1. train policymakers and innovation support agencies and technopole managers;
    2. conduct work on surveys of innovation projects in specific sites and institutions to identify their sources;
    3. perform innovation audits to identify regulatory and related obstacles to innovation.

    More information on the programme can be found on the CMI website.
